Oven cleaning

Burnt-on grease is the job most people put off longest. A professional oven clean takes the racks, trays, glass and inside walls back to bare metal and glass. Here is what it involves and what to expect.

In short

A professional oven clean usually means taking out the racks, trays and often the door glass, soaking or scrubbing them, then degreasing the inside of the oven. A single oven often takes a couple of hours; a range cooker or very heavy build-up takes longer.

What an oven clean usually includes

  • Racks, shelves and trays — taken out and soaked or scrubbed until the grease lifts
  • Inside the oven — the walls, floor and roof degreased, including the corners where grease bakes on hardest
  • Door glass — on many ovens the inner glass can be taken out so the grease trapped between the panes can be cleaned
  • Seals, knobs and the front — wiped and polished

Hobs, grill pans and extractor hoods are often added on. Say what you want done when you book, and send a photo in the chat so your cleaner knows what they are walking into.

How long it takes

A single built-in oven often takes a couple of hours. A double oven, a range cooker, or an oven that has not been cleaned for years can take a good deal longer. Your cleaner can give you a better idea from a photo.

Turn the oven off and let it cool completely before your cleaner arrives — they cannot start on a hot oven.

When you can use it again

Ask your cleaner which products they use and how soon you can cook. Many professional cleaners use products designed for ovens and rinse everything thoroughly, so you can usually use it the same day. If anyone in the home is sensitive to cleaning products, mention it before the day.

When to book an oven clean

  • When you are moving out — letting agents check inside the oven, so it is part of most end-of-tenancy cleans
  • Before selling a home or a viewing
  • When it smokes as it heats up, or smells of old food
  • Once or twice a year if you cook most days
