Window cleaning

Clean windows let in more light and make the whole home look looked-after. Here is what a window clean covers, how often to book one and what your cleaner will need from you.

In short

A window clean covers the glass and usually the frames and sills — outside, inside, or both. Many homes book every four to eight weeks for outside windows. Your cleaner needs safe access, such as a clear path to the back of the house, and on Holler you see the price before you book.

Check what a cleaner’s listing includes — some do glass only, others include frames and sills, and inside windows may be an extra. If you are unsure, ask in the chat before you book the time.

How often to clean your windows

  • Outside — every four to eight weeks is common; more often near a busy road, the coast or trees
  • Inside — a few times a year, or more often if you get a lot of condensation
  • One-off — before selling or letting, after building work, or when you move in

Windows tend to show dirt most in spring, when low sun picks out every streak.

What access the cleaner needs

  • A way round to the back — unlocked side gate, or tell them where the key is
  • Somewhere to park near the house, especially if they bring a water-fed pole
  • Space under windows — move plant pots, bins and garden furniture out of the way
  • Pets kept indoors or away from the garden while they work
  • For inside windows, clear sills and blinds pulled up
Message your cleaner in the app with access details before the day — gate code, parking, which windows are hardest to reach. It saves time and a wasted trip.

Safety at height

Upstairs windows are where accidents happen. Many window cleaners now use water-fed poles, which clean upstairs windows from the ground with purified water, so no ladder is needed. Where a ladder is used it should be on firm, level ground, at a safe angle and not over-reached from.

  • Do not lean out of upstairs windows to clean the outside yourself
  • Ask how your cleaner reaches high windows before the day if you have a tall or awkward building
  • Some windows — over conservatory roofs, steep drops or flats several floors up — may not be safely reachable without specialist equipment. A good cleaner will tell you rather than take the risk

It is also worth choosing a cleaner with public liability insurance, in case something is damaged — see how to choose a cleaner.

Questions people ask

How often should windows be cleaned?

Outside windows every four to eight weeks is common, more often near busy roads or the coast. Inside windows a few times a year is usually enough.

Do I need to be in for a window cleaner?

Not for outside windows, as long as they can get to the back of the house. For inside windows you need to be in or arrange key access.

What is a water-fed pole?

A long pole that pumps purified water to a brush, so upstairs windows can be cleaned from the ground without a ladder. Purified water dries without leaving marks.

Does window cleaning include frames and sills?

It depends on the cleaner. Many include frames and sills on the outside; check the listing or ask in the app chat before booking.
